The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), chairman Wafula Chebukati has pledged to work with former agency CEO Ezra Chiloba in the upcoming 2022 General Election.
Speaking in Limuru during an engagement forum with the National Council of Churches on Wednesday, December 8, Chebukati noted that they will be working hand in hand with the Media Council of Kenya during the electioneering period.
He noted that the Communications Authority of Kenya will assist in the provision of network connectivity in the country ahead of the polls.
''We are working closely with the Communications Authority of Kenya on the matters of connectivity,'' Chebukati lamented.
Similarly, the IEBC chairperson assured that the media will be fully involved in the election process so as to ensure that they announce results and report on electoral matters promptly.
At the same time, Chebukati urged stakeholders to collaborate in accordance with the law adding that it is urgent for government agencies to work with the electoral body. He further stated that it was not a favor for the government to work with the IEBC noting that it was their obligation to do so.
''It is not a favor that the agencies must work with the IEBC, it is a requirement in accordance with the law,'' he noted.
In preparations for the upcoming general election, the commission will be working with the National Police Service through the Election Security Program to ensure that the entire process is secure.
In addition, Chebukati refuted the ongoing claims that the electoral body is facing challenges; he clarified that the agency is in right terms and working towards have a free and fair exercise.
The commission will also partner with the Director of Public Prosecution to set up a desk on matters of election malpractices during the process.
The Chebukati-led committee in conjunction with stakeholders has reviewed the electoral laws and proposed amendments to help facilitate a transparent process.
Recently, the electoral body had announced withdrawal from the Election Preparedness Committee citing alleged infringement of its independence. The crucial team is chaired by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
Chebukati had raised concerns over the terms of reference of the election preparedness committee.
