A Zetech University student was apprehended by a multi-agency team while reportedly selling fake Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) examination papers.

In an operation led by undercover agents attached to Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) and others drawn from the Monitoring and Surveillance Unit, the suspect was led into a trap that flashed him from his hideout.

The Monitoring and Surveillance Unit is a department under the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) headquartered along Kiambu Road.

After his apprehension, detectives seized several printed fake examination papers and others stored in his mobile phone as soft copies.

DCI stated that the suspect had allegedly created a number of social media pages including WhatsApp groups where he sold the examination papers to unsuspecting students.

"The suspect was charging them Ksh2,600 for Science papers and Ksh1,600 for Humanities," the agency's statement read in part.

He was immediately placed under custody and will be arraigned in court to be charged with examination malpractice.

"The suspect contravened section 28 of National Examination malpractices Act 29, 2012," DCI stated.

His arrest came a day after KCPE exams were concluded. While assuring parents and teachers of exams credibility, Education Cabinet Secretary George Omore Magoha noted that the government is vigilant in ensuring the exams are not sabotaged.

"I want to confirm to you this morning that the exam has not leaked and the first exam shall be seen after it has left the container," Magoha stated.

He added, "there are a few crooks who are still trying to leak papers; if you are stupid and want to buy the papers, go and buy. But I want to confirm to you that you will not be buying our exams."

He also cautioned teachers against leaking the exam papers adding that punitive action would be taken against those found capable.

In the recently concluded KCPE exams, three individuals were apprehended for exam malpractices.

KCSE candidates will commence with the tests on Monday, March 14.
