Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga's campaign spokesman Prof. Makau Mutua has shed light on what appears to be Azimio- One Kenya Alliance (OKA) confusion for a number of days now.
Speaking to the media on Monday, March 14, Mutua sought to clear the air, affirming that the One Kenya Alliance did join the Azimio la Umoja movement but only individual political parties signed the coalition agreement.
He added that a coalition could not sign to join another coalition hence only the Wiper party, and not OKA, signed the deal.
"What was signed on Saturday was an agreement to form the Azimio coalition party. Let me say that political parties come to Azimio as individuals, they don't come as alliances or coalitions.
"So, whether it's Wiper, KANU, or ODM, they all signed the agreement as individual political parties," he stated.
Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka had stated that the entire process was hurried and that he was not sure of what he had agreed to, raising concerns.
"There was nothing there, If I asked all those party secretaries-general what they affixed their signatures to, nobody knows," Kalonzo stated.
Revealing intricate details to the media, Kalonzo affirmed that (ODM) Director of Elections Junet Muhammed had introduced a second document to be signed -proposing Raila to be the Presidential candidate for Azimio la Umoja movement instead of the agreed-upon Azimio-OKA coalition.
"Junet was looking for proposers for Raila to become the Azimio candidate and yet we agreed that the new political outfit was Azimio-OKA. If that happened, if it was not rushed as it was, all of us in OKA would have signed. Quite frankly, my Secretary-General has not signed because it was not specific about Azimio," he pointed out.
Defining the way forward, Kalonzo stated that his co-principals within the OKA regime would be retreating to review the legal technicalities of the agreement.
"I still want to have a meeting with my fellow principals and our lawyers including myself will have to reflect on that technicality. However, what is very clear is that we will register Azimio-OKA as a coalition political party," he noted.
The issue has been at the centre of public debate as to whether a coalition could join another coalition. During the unveiling of Raila as the Azimio la Umoja Presidential candidate, over 20 political parties signed in agreement.
