Ali Mwatsau, a Mombasa politician, survived a Tuesday night assassination attempt after unknown gunmen sprayed his vehicle with 22 bullets.
Mwatsau - a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) politician - is eyeing the Mvita parliamentary seat in the August 9 polls.
According to a police report, Mwatsau was heading home after a prayer session when he was accosted by the gunmen in the informal settlements of Tudor.
Reports further indicate that the gunmen, who were in two vehicles, fled immediately after the attack.
The politician sustained serious injuries on his arms and legs.
He was rushed to a Mombasa Hospital by a tuk-tuk rider and was immediately admitted.
Detectives assigned to the case detailed that they visited the scene, processed it and collected exhibits that would aid them to unravel the case.
They also towed the car to the nearest police station after photographing the scene.
The police are expected to release a preliminary report before issuing a conclusive one later one.
A manhunt for the unidentified gunmen was also launched as investigations on the matter commenced.
Eyewitnesses, nonetheless, claimed that the plan was well organised to end the life of the aspirant, as the assassins were well trained.
They also questioned how the incident occurred only 1.7 kilometres away from Makupa Police Station, a six-minute drive to the crime scene.
Police are yet to speak comprehensively on the assassination attempt.
