As parties within the Kenya Kwanza alliance inch closer to their primaries, a leaked draft coalition agreement has revealed the intricate details of the power-sharing deal between the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the Amani National Congress (ANC) and Ford Kenya.
According to the draft coalition agreement, Deputy President William Ruto is pitted as the coalition's flagbearer while the running-mate slot will go to the vote-rich Mt Kenya region.
The running mate will be chosen from among UDA members.
Should the coalition form the next government, ANC's Musalia Mudavadi and Ford-Kenya's Moses Wetangula will share 30 per cent of the government, with the remaining 70 per cent going to UDA and other affiliate parties.
In terms of the coalition's nominations process, the parties will opt for a consensus mostly via negotiations as opposed to the ballot process, particularly for constituent parties in their respective strongholds.
The same formula will be applied in the sharing of funds. The proposed formula was drafted by a technical committee led by seasoned politicians including Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki (UDA), lawyers Dan Ameyo (ANC) and Benson Milimo (Ford-Kenya).
The news comes even as DP Ruto's team announced a one-week break from campaigns in a bid to fine tune the document before it is presented to the Registrar of Political Parties by Saturday, April 9.
Both the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio La Umoja political factions have had a conundrum in picking the preferable candidates for various counties.
This has led to a section of politicians dropping their bids in favour of others in order for the coalitions to stand unified.
UDA party primaries are set for Thursday, April 14, while the ANC party will hold its nominations from Tuesday, April 12 to Thursday, April 21.
