Kenyans living in Nyanza, Western and Rift Valley regions have been urged to brace for moderate rains this weekend despite the current sunny and dry weather conditions.
Kenya Met in its weekend weather advisory published on Friday, January 9, said that rains were also expected in some parts of Central Kenya and South Eastern Lowlands.
Counties in these regions include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.
According to the meteorological department, rains in the aforementioned regions would begin on Friday this week and continue to Monday next week, with the showers predicted to start mostly in the afternoon.
Kenya Met said the affected counties will experience sunny mornings followed by afternoon rainfall that will taper off by evening, with predominantly cloudy conditions expected to persist overnight.
Similarly, rains in the Central Kenya region counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi were predicted to occur on Sunday this week.
As per the advisory, the rains will be minimal with sunny conditions expected on Friday and Saturday this week, as well as Monday and Tuesday next week.
Elsewhere, most parts of the country are forecast to stay sunny and dry, with particularly harsh hot and dry conditions expected to persist across the North Eastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo.
Additionally, the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale, as well as the coastal parts of Tana River County, were also predicted to remain sunny and dry throughout the forecast period.
Temperature Advisory
In its weekend advisory, the meteorological department also warned of very low night temperatures in some parts of Central Kenya, including Nairobi County.
According to Kenya Met, temperatures in this region were expected to drop to 7°C for the next five days, with residents urged to take precautions.
Daytime temperatures are also projected to rise sharply across much of the country, with Northern Kenya and the coastal region bearing the brunt as highs climb to around 38°C.
