Cracks have emerged in National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi's Democratic Party (DP) hours after joining Deputy President William Ruto-led faction, Kenya Kwanza.
Addressing the media on Saturday, April 9, a section of disgruntled Democratic Party (DP) leaders led by Deputy Secretary General, Wambugu Nyamu, insisted that the party had not joined Kenya Kwanza.
Wambugu explained that Muturi's move was not sanctioned by the party's decision-making organs.
Wambugu added that the party had reached a decision to field a presidential candidate in the August 9 polls, a decision he said was made during the National Delegates Conference (NDC) in February.
He disclosed that the party's leadership will convene a meeting to discuss Muturi's move, adding that Kenya Kwanza was not a viable option for the party.
"We will give a way forward after party officials have met tomorrow (Sunday, April 11). During the NDC, declarations were made and we decided that Kenya Kwanza was not a viable for us," he said.
Wambugu stated that the party had nothing personal against its leader, however, insisting that DP would not join Kenya Kwanza before a unanimous decision is reached by the party's top organs.
"As an individual, he is free to join whichever camp but he cannot make that decision for the party alone. He does not have the powers to do that," stated Wambugu.
During the signing of the deal with Kenya Kwanza, Muturi stated that the decision was endorsed by the party's leadership and was accompanied by a section of its leaders.
"I have travelled through this country and I can confirm the heartbeat of many Kenyans is with this party. We, as DP, are happy to fully associate with the Kenya Kwanza alliance.
"Today I am happy because my party has given me that backing and I indeed want to say to my brothers who believe in this conversation that we cannot be if the others can't. There can't be a Kenya for different people. Kenya is big for all of us," he stated.
At the same time, Muturi and long-time Democratic Party leader, Kanzolo Munyao, stated that they had settled on Ruto as the presidential candidate, further detailing how the government will be shared.
"The government shall be shared on the basis of elected members i.e MCAs, MPs, Women Reps, Senators, and Governors. Only the position of the President has been reserved for Ruto," Munyao stated.
