Politicians allied to Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition have threatened to impeach National Assembly Speaker, Justin Muturi, for paying allegiance to the Kenya Kwanza alliance

Narok Senator, Ledama ole Kina, Murang’a Woman Representative, Sabina Chege, and Kieni Member of Parliament, Kanini Kega, argued that Muturi’s decision to join Deputy President William Ruto’s camp would affect how he conducts the House business.

The trio, who spoke in Nyeri, on Tuesday, April 12, demanded that Muturi resigns and pave way for election of a Speaker who would be impartial, failure to which they would sponsor a motion to impeach him

“Muturi ought to resign and allow a non-partisan leader to succeed him. He is the Speaker of the National Assembly and not one for Jubilee Party. By choosing sides, he has already created the perception that he will lean towards one side,” Kega, a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta argued.

Sabina Chege, who has been at the forefront campaigning for Azimio la Umoja presidential aspirant, Raila Odinga, added that they would let the Speaker decide his own fate.

“He should do an honourable thing and resign. But if he wants to continue earning a double salary, then we leave it to God.

“I don’t think there is a need for unnecessary drama in Parliament where we know we have few days to the General Election,” Chege cautioned her colleagues against creating a crisis at the National Assembly.

She, nonetheless, termed Muturi ungrateful for ditching Uhuru, who made him the third most powerful leader in the country.

“He failed while contesting for a parliamentary seat. We know where he came from, yet he has seen that the best gift he can give Uhuru is joining the other side,” Chege lamented.

Ole Kina, nonetheless, argued that the Speaker had already tendered his resignation by joining the DP’s side. Days prior to Muturi joining Kenya Kwanza, his Senate counterpart, Ken Lusaka was set to be unveiled as the new entrant in the coalition.

Lusaka declined to honour a ceremony scheduled to unveil him as the Bungoma gubernatorial aspirant.

However, Gatundu South MP, Moses Kuria, an ally of Ruto, claimed that both speakers had deserted Uhuru and Raila to support the DP.

“Dear Mr President, the Deputy President, the Speakers of the Senate and National Assembly, 60 per cent of MPs in Senate and the National Assembly, more than 70 per cent of MCAs countrywide and yours truly (Kuria) as your village mate and long term friend are in Kenya Kwanza.

“How long will you resist?” Kuria posted on his social media pages.

Ruto allies, nevertheless, castigated the government for allegedly using state agencies to coerce them against supporting the DP.

Mimi sitishiwi, na kama kuna mtu anafikiri anaweza nipange, ajue kwamba siwezi pangwa. (I cannot be threatened. My decision is steadfast),” Speaker Muturi had earlier on, stated.
