An inmate serving a life sentence at the Kamiti Maximum Prison has been handed three more years after the court found him guilty of defrauding a PhD holder of Ksh800,000 in a job-seeking scam.
Milimani Chief Magistrate, Wendy Kagendo, imposed the three-year sentence in addition to the life sentence the inmate is serving.
The court found the inmate guilty of impersonating Defense Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa, to swindle the victim with a promise of a well-paying job at State House.
The Kamiti inmate was sentenced without the option of a fine since he was already serving a life sentence.
"The punishment makes no difference but I hand him three years to deter other offenders," Justice Kagendo ruled.
The inmate had confessed before the Milimani Court that he had pretended to be the CS and that he would help his victim secure a job at State House.
He also admitted in court that he had been swindling other unsuspecting Kenyans for the last 15 years. The charge sheet indicated that he had on diverse dates between July 24, 2020, and September 11, 2020, committed the offense targeting the PhD holder.
Explaining how he got so close to the victim, the inmate stated that he first befriended her on social media and introduced himself as CS Wamalwa.
"Your honour, the accused met the victim by befriending her on her Facebook and introduced himself as Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa," the prosecutor told the court.
He instructed the PhD holder to send her CV so he could deliver it to State House for job consideration for the position of Human Resource Manager.
"He made a fake appointment letter purportedly signed by the Head of Civil Service," the prosecutor further stated.
The victim realised that she had been swindled after the inmate's phone went off for days. She was compelled to report the incident and after investigations, it emerged that she was defrauded by an inmate serving a jail term at Kamiti Maximum Prison.
