Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has given way forward on Nairobi Expressway's lower road after concerns were raised over its damages.

In an interview with Capital FM, KeNHA's Corporate Communications Deputy Director Samwel Kumba confirmed that repairs would be done on the lower road before the scheduled launch by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He further added that all feeder roads that were damaged as part of the construction which began in mid-October 2019 would also be repaired.

His statement comes after concerns were raised by Kenyans who claimed that sections of Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way had been damaged during the construction.

Specifically, the road users argued that Mombasa Road had three lanes on either side with proper walkways which have since been compromised.

"We had an even 3 lane on each side of the highway. Kindly give us, we paid taxes for it. On each side of the highway we had properly done walkways," lamented a user.

Other complaints revolved around the lack of street lights on the lower deck as well as few footbridges making it harder for pedestrians to cross.

During the interview, Kumba further disclosed that Moja Expressway would be tasked with the day-to-day running of the highway once launched.

He also revealed that, for the 27 years that the road would be under management, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), which designed and constructed the road, would be responsible for its maintenance as well as operations.

Moja Expressway is a subsidiary of CRBC.

Motorists are preparing for the official opening of Nairobi Expressway which runs from Mlolongo to James Gichuru Road in Westlands.

Kumba noted that they will have three modes of accessing the Expressway including an On-Board Unit (OBU) to be installed on personal vehicles which reduces the time it takes at entry and exits.

Other modes are paying by cash or a preloaded card. The 27-kilometer road project is aimed at reducing the time traveled from Mlolongo to Westlands.
