Detectives working to unravel the mysterious fire that killed six family members on Sunday, April 10, have linked the incident to a fight over a Ksh2.3 billion estate.
The detectives' report indicated the family was embroidered in a bitter battle to control the multi-billion wealth, with conflicting factions claiming administrative rights.
Detectives revealed that the family is polygamous and its members do not seem to agree on the control of the prime property in Murang'a County.
According to the sleuths, there are also whiffs of cultism at the centre of the dispute. Police reports indicated that the main suspect is a relative, who was engaged in an argument with the family before the tragedy struck.
The six people who perished in the fire included a grandmother, her three children and two grandchildren, who were inside the house at the time it caught fire.
Witnesses claimed that the doors were locked from outside when the incident happened at Nguthuru village in Kandara area of Murang'a County.
The grandmother's sister was taken into custody in connection with the suspected arson. The main suspect in the attack reportedly moved out of the house just days before the fire incident.
A report by the detectives pointed a finger at the suspect who they claimed was a member of a suspicious faith group. Sleuths are also looking into the dealings of the group which they suspect of cultism.
Detectives also questioned the suspect's daughters aged 16 and 12 years to establish if they were involved in the arson attack. However, sleuths found that the minors were not privy to any information on the same.
Neighbours claimed there was bad blood between the deceased and her sister, both of whom were living in the house at the time.
Murang’a County Police Commander, Ali Nuno, noted that police officers were called to the scene by locals but unfortunately the mother, her three daughters and two of her grandchildren had already perished.
The suspect is said to have saved her belongings from her room, with questions on why she did not save the lives coming up.
