Nominated Senator Beth Mugo has intimated that it is the perfect opportunity to rename the Thika Superhighway after Kenya’s third president, Mwai Kibaki, in honour of one of his greatest achievements.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday, April 26, the lawmaker who held various ministerial positions described Kibaki as an honourable statesman.

Mugo noted that the late President was more of a workaholic who did not fancy fanfare and praise but wanted to see his main projects successfully completed with due diligence.

“We asked him to name one major landmark project after him and he declined. He told us Kenyans will do that if they deemed it fit,” she narrated.

On his part, Kipipiri Member of National Assembly Amos Kimunya, who also served as Finance Minister in Kibaki's government, shared similar sentiments in a special parliamentary session in honour of Kibaki.

“He was a gentleman par excellence who exuded greatness and humility,” recalled Kimunya.

Amos Kimunya oversaw the financial element of the Ksh 32 billion, which was partly funded by the Kenyan government, African Development Bank and the Exim bank of China.

Beth Mugo remembered Kibaki’s most challenging moments- the 2007/2008 post election violence- she asked Kibaki to reach out to his political nemesis Raila Odinga to end the nationwide violence.

“I beseeched him to do anything in his power to end the violence which he did, even though others advised him to remain steadfast and not make any deal with Mr. Odinga, '' she intimated.

Beth Mugo, who now runs her cancer foundation, was a close friend of Kibaki beyond work. It was President Kibaki who officially launched her foundation- the Beth Mugo Cancer Foundation.

The 82-year old nominated senator has since quit active politics to focus on philanthropic pursuits and her cancer foundation.

The legislator gained popularity when she came public with his battle with cancer and how she survived it. Her husband Nicholas Mugo, a long-serving diplomat succumbed to prostate cancer on February 3, 2022.
