A senior police officer is on the spot for threatening a journalist working for the Nation Media Group, NTV.
On Friday, the cameraperson was covering a protest by Maasai herders who were accusing the police of laxity and hard handedness.
The herders confronted the Isinya sub-county OCPD Ancent Kaloki alleging that he is always unfair when addressing insecurity matters affecting them.
The NTV crew was covering the scuffle but the OCPD allegedly did not want the press to capture the confrontation.
But in a report, the journalists accused the police boss of threatening them in an effort to confiscate the NTV cameraman's equipment when he was cornered by irate herders.
According to reports by NTV, the OCPD allegedly threatened to arrest journalists covering the event with the irate herders accusing the cops of collecting bribes from them.
"Isinya sub-county OCPD Ancent Kaloki attempts to draw a gun in an effort to confiscate NTV cameraman Stanley Ngotho's camera when he was cornered by irate herders. The OCPD threatened to arrest journalists covering the event," NTV captioned the video of the confrontation.
In 2021, the police made international headlines after firing tear gas canisters at DW's journalist Mariel Müller while she was covering a protest in Nairobi.
"People protesting against police brutality and lockdown measures in Nairobi. They say police officers use lockdown measures as an excuse to crack down on residents," Müller stated.
"Kenyan police shot me twice in the leg with a tear gas canister fired by a gun. The second time they hit me directly while we were doing an interview for DW News," she added.
Amnesty International and the Foreign Press Association of Africa condemned the attack.
The brutality meted out on journalists by police has been condemned by various human rights organizations and although the police service has promised to deal with the issue, rogue cops get away with these acts making it harder to deal with the vice.
