Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Issack Hassan is just a heartbeat away from becoming a Court of Appeal Judge.

A notice shared by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Wednesday, May 4, indicated that Hassan was shortlisted for the position alongside 31 other individuals.

The shortlist is in response to an advert carried in the local dailies in mid-March announcing six posts for Judges of the Court of Appeal.

The former IEBC boss is scheduled to present himself before the vetting panel with interviews slated to take place on June 21, 2022.

Other shortlisted are High Court Judges among them Justice Mativo John Mutinga, Lady Justice Ong’udi Hedwig Imbosa and Lady Justice Muchemi Florence.

68 individuals including Waihiga David Mwaure who is vying for the Presidency under the Agano Party had applied for the job.

Hassan headed the IEBC between 2011 and 2016. His departure resulted from an uproar by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's then Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) which had lost the 2013 polls.

Lilian Mahiri-Zaja, who deputised Issack at IEBC, was also shortlisted for the position of the High Court Judge although she had made applications for both Court of Appeal and the High Court positions.

Interviews for the Court of Appeal position will kick off on Thursday, June 23 and conclude on July 6, 2022, while those for High Court Judges will begin on July 18, 2022, to August 24, 2022.

104 applicants for the position of High Court were shortlisted from a pool of 266 applications.

"Members of the public are invited to avail in writing any information of interest in respect to any of the shortlisted candidates using the contacts below.

"Take note that the Commission may interview any member of the public who has submitted information on any of the shortlisted candidates and such information shall be kept confidential," cautioned JSC.

The shortlist comes a year after the Court of Appeal president William Ouko replaced Jackton Boma Ojwang, as Supreme Court Judge.
