A Facebook post has lifted the lid on the connection between a former police officer who shot three people dead in a South African hospital and Kenya.
Jaun-Paul Carl Malgas, 39, is said to have stormed into Somerset hospital on Saturday evening, May 7, disarmed a police officer and shot him alongside two other patients.
The patients passed away immediately while the officer died undergoing treatment.
A spot-check on the suspect's website revealed that he had earlier boasted about his wealth in both Kenya and Ukraine.
In a specialised message to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa asking for help to help retrieve the money, he argued that the amount was colossal and that it could help feed the needy.
"Can Somebody please contact the President, tell him or any willing party that I'm staying about 10min from the nearest landing strip. I need them to contact Kenya and Ukraine
"Have some cash laying around and I just wanna fetch it and are willing to take care of the cost on our return and can help feed those really in need, especially on the West Coast," read the statement in part.
The suspect has since been presented in a South African Court and charged with murder, robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
In his defense, the suspect's lawyer, however, argued that his client suffered from a mental illness and would experience bouts of severe depression.
The prosecutor, however, declined to grant his release on bail arguing that he is a threat and will be in handcuffs in court for the safety of the other attendees.
“He appeared in the handcuffs and leg irons because we needed to consider the type of crime he (allegedly) committed. He is also a threat. We needed to protect the court officials and members of the public.
“He told the court he suffers from severe depression and that he is suicidal. Some investigations still need to be done, including the ID parade. Witness statements still have to be obtained," stated the prosecution as per Sunday Times in South Africa.
The case was moved to June 30, 2022.
