Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has stated that he won't be drawn into sideshows with United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairman Johnstone Muthama who has persistently called him out over allegedly misusing county funds.
In a TV interview with KTN News, Wednesday, May 11, Mutua noted that they would both consolidate votes for Deputy President William Ruto despite being strange bedfellows.
The governor noted that he would prioritise the deal he signed with the Kenya Kwanza coalition as opposed to other theatrics.
"Johnstone Muthama is the Chairman of UDA; I am not in UDA I am in Kenya Kwanza with Ruto, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula. I'm not going to be drawn into sideshows. My main agenda is getting votes for William Ruto. It's to show Kenyans that we need to be in a safe pair of hands. It's time money flowed to the people of Kenya," he told KTN News.
Muthama had initially affirmed that he would not share a podium with the governor over allegations of Mutua not fulfilling his promises to the people of Machakos.
The UDA chairman called for the governor to repent and ask for forgiveness from the people of Machakos, noting that he had not addressed governance issues that had been raised over the past nine years.
"I have had differences with Mutua for the last 9 years about governance in terms of utilization of public funds. I have always been against the squandering of public funds which he has never rectified as of yesterday. I am a principled person and I could not see why I could compromise on my beliefs."
Muthama was conspicuously absent from the Monday, May 9, meeting held in Tala, Machakos county, where Mutua was welcomed into the Kenya Kwanza camp.
The two politicians have been rivals for years as the scramble for the over 2 million votes from Ukambani intensifies.
On most occasions, the two have been on opposite ends of the political divide but after Mutua joining the Kenya Kwanza regime, they will both drive towards the same agenda.
