The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has picked Rigathi Gachagua's replacement in the Mathira parliamentary contest.
While campaigning in the area on Saturday, May 21, UDA led by Deputy President, William Ruto, settled on Konyu Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), Eric Wamumbi, as its candidate.
The Mathira seat was left without a UDA contestant after Ruto picked Gachagua as his running mate in the August 9 polls.
Wamumbi was unveiled in the party's first visit to the constituency for a political rally since Gachagua was picked to deputise Ruto.
He will now face off with Jubilee's 76-year old billionaire, Wambura Wamaranga. This will be Wambura's second shot at the parliamentary seat, having lost in the 2017 polls to Gachagua.
Wamumbi was named during a campaign rally that served as Gachagua's homecoming, where the Kenya Kwanza presidential running mate took time to unleash more attacks at their Azimio La Umoja competitors.
Wamumbi made headlines in 2020 after the death of his wife Catherine Nyambura.
Police summoned the MCA to record a statement following the mystery surrounding the deceased's passing.
His wife's body was found in Hohwe Dam, Mathira, on Monday morning, May 24, 2022, and Wamumbi was summoned as detectives looked to piece together the events that led to her untimely death.
An autopsy by Dr Nyabuto Brenda, a pathologist who represented the family, told the media that Nyambura's body did not have any physical injuries.
She stated that the results were not conclusive, adding that a government pathologist had to be consulted.
According to the pathologist's report, the examination revealed that her head, lungs and stomach had a lot of fluid.
