Police arrested a man who attempted to interrupt a speech by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati at Bomas of Kenya.

Chebukati convened a meeting with presidential aspirants and their representatives on Tuesday, May 23, to brief them on the clearance requirements before being allowed to vie for the country's top job.

While at the podium, a man identified as Julius Kamau approached him and began chanting slogans demanding that the country be freed from poor governance.

He further claimed that a majority of Kenyans were living like slaves yet their forefathers had fought for for the nation's independence to better subsequent generations' lives.

"They have stolen our future, they have stolen our country. We cannot continue living like slaves in our own country. Our fathers fought and died trying to free this nation from the shackles of colonialism.

"We must get to stand up now and fight for the truth as we know it and as we see it," he chanted.

A police officer, with the help of three other men, however, intercepted the charged man and whisked him out of the hall even as he relentlessly continued to rant.

At the event, Chebukati announced that eleven presidential aspirants risked being locked out of the race after failing to submit the names of their running mates by the Monday, May 16, deadline.

He further noted that the voter's register will be ready by June 9 before its gazettement soon thereafter.

“The voters' Register will be ready by the 9th of June and the KMPG audit report will also be made public. We have a few days left to the August 9 elections and the commission is committed to giving this country a free, fair, and credible election. All our processes are up to date in terms of the elections timeline.

"We have done almost all procurements and we are now working on the register of voters which we want to be ready in the next couple of days in time for audit having procured the audit firm which will undertake the process," announced Chebukati.

Chebukati also confirmed that campaigns will kick off immediately after the registration and clearance of aspirants which is scheduled to take place between May 29 and June 7.
