One of the wives of the slain businessman, Samuel Mugota - who was shot in broad daylight in Nairobi's Mirema estate - has recorded a testament with the police revealing tough relationship rules her husband had set despite living a very secretive life.
According to one of the wives identified by the police statement as Winnie Wambui and who lives on Kenyatta Road, Kiambu county, Mugota's life and those of the people he chose to engage with was shrouded with secrecy and prohibitive rules.
Wambui explained, in her testament, that Mugota hardly spent a night away from home.
"He was secretive. I never knew any of his friends. However, he used to receive numerous calls from women. I could not ask him whom they were because he detested being questioned," she recorded in her statement.
Despite numerous reports linking him to drink spiking syndicate around clubs in Nairobi, the wife disclosed that Mugota never took alcohol nor did he smoke.
While away from home, Mugota instructed his wife never to call him or even send a text message even in case of an emergency.
"From the word go, he set the rules that I should never call him when he was away from home. He would say: ‘When I need you, I will call you," the wife explained.
Mugota was shot six times in broad daylight by a lone gunman who then walked to a getaway car. Preliminary reports indicated that he had three children and seven wives.
However, according to detectives, two more women have recorded their statements. One of those who recorded statements said Mugota told her he was a government officer working at the Ministry of Livestock in Nairobi.
She added that Mugota was kind and to cement his love and commitment, he paid her house rent for a whole year and frequently sent her upkeep money.
Mugota, however, only visited the house twice and did not spend the night there. She told investigators that the two kept in touch through phone calls and he had promised to visit once back from an official trip.
Another woman claimed that Mugota refused to introduce her to his family and his life remained secretive.
So far, the police are holding one suspect, Dennis Karani, who surrendered to detectives after being linked to the businessman's murder.
Police, in their statement, noted that Mugota was killed over a business deal gone wrong. They also linked him to a number of criminal activities including sim card fraud.
