Women who ran drink spiking synidcates have now resorted to luring men on social media rather than entertainment joints after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) cracked the whip in local pubs.
DCI, while exposing the new trick, warned that the women further kidnap the victims and demand ransom from them or their families.
The women promise to entertain the man only for the partying to be cut short by a man who posing as their boyfriend.
"They all team up demanding a ransom from the man they lured from social media. In one incident one man was held ransom and forced to lie to his relatives that he had been involved in an accident demanding Ksh100,000 for treatment.
"The man had called his relatives claiming that he had been involved in a road accident and needed Ksh100,000 for treatment," DCI statement read in part.
According to a report by DCI, the new scheme was exposed following a raid on one of their operating houses located in Ruaraka, Nairobi.
The raid saw three women alleged to be the masterminds of the new scheme and two men accused of being their accomplices apprehended.
The arrest came a day after Police Spokesperson Bruno Shioso announced a nationwide operation to wipe out the drink spiking syndicate.
"Our officers have been working around it and we have the names of all the cartels and persons involved. It is something bad victimising Kenyans who are having a happy time. We are relying on intelligence while collaborating with other agencies," Shioso explained.
He further advised revelers to exercise caution and be alert while partying in different entertainment joints.
"Go out and enjoy your drink but be cautious. Just know who you are with.
Go to nice clubs where you are well known rather than just going to random places," Shioso advised.
