The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has called on Kenyans to share information on the whereabouts of a driver captured pulling a dangerous stunt while driving in a viral video.
In a statement dated Saturday, June 4, the road agency described the driver's actions as reckless noting that many Kenyans had lost their lives because of such incidents.
In the viral video circulating on social media, the driver was filmed leaving the driver's seat, letting off the steering wheel, and temporarily getting out through the window of the vehicle as it was still in motion.
"This is reckless and dangerous. We condemn the stunt and any other that may endanger the lives of road users. Share widely until the driver is found.
"We urge members of the public who may have any information regarding this driver or vehicle to kindly contact the Authority," NTSA pleaded with Kenyans.
According to NTSA, over 1,000 Kenyans have lost their lives in road accidents this year. The road agency stated that the majority of the fatalities had been caused by reckless driving.
"We have recorded 1,912 fatalities as of May 30, 2022, with the majority of the crashes being attributed to human-related fatal behaviours. Share widely," NTSA stated.
In the video, the male driver was accompanied by his friend who filmed the incident while seated in the passenger seat. The driver bragged about his stunt stating that he was used to it.
"I usually drive like this. I can leave here (driver's seat and steering) and move to the bonnet. I am good at this and we have money. I can also get down and run," he bragged.
The statement by NTSA came after a section of Kenyans called on the road agency and the police to arrest the driver, with some stating that his actions can lead to a serious accident.
"The Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) need to do something to keep other road users safe. This guy has already given up on his life," Chief Misera tweeted.
"One may understand the person on the driver's seat but the one who is recording all these while laughing needs a factory reset as soon as possible," Sheez Guvness concurred.
