Controversial businessman and former MCA candidate Dennis Mbae, died on Wednesday night, June 8, after his vehicle was sprayed with bullets by unknown gunmen in the Bonanza area, Embu town.

According to Embu West Sub-county police boss, Julius Kyumbule, investigations had been launched in order to probe the incident which occurred 250 metres from the politician's tightly-secured home.

He revealed that the attackers fled with a vehicle that had no registration numbers.

"It is true the trader was heading home when he was fatally attacked by people whose vehicle had no registration numbers. We have commenced investigations with a view of establishing the truth of the matter," he stated.

Witnesses at the scene intimated to the media that Mbae was attacked by the gunmen - just after closing his business located in Embu town.

The gunmen trailed Mbae's vehicle and proceeded to block him infront- and opened fire over 20 times at close range before speeding off.

"The victim was badly wounded during the night attack and he would not have survived," one of the witnesses stated.

Nearby residents who responded to the gunshots, found the politician in the driver's cabin while groaning in pain. He was rushed to Embu referral hospital but had passed away as a result of blood loss.

"I was at home when the sounds of the gunshots hit my ears. I ran to the scene and I was shocked to find the businessman inside the vehicle wounded," another witness told the media.

Police boss Kyumbule requested the politician's relatives and colleagues to be patient as police rush to probe the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.

The fallen politician had been linked to criminal activities in Embu town and had in 2018 been charged with possession of bhang worth Ksh260,000.

During the 2017 General Election, Mbae had contested the Kirimari ward seat on a Maendeleo Chap Chap party ticket but lost to Morris Muchiri.

In 2017, police officers revealed that they had been trailing the politician for three months on allegations of trafficking bhang. The officers cornered him at his house where they discovered the drugs at his Probox vehicle.

He was, however, charged and released on a Ksh300,000 bond.
