The Kenya Railways has cautioned Kenyans against four habits that have been blamed for the sharp rise in the number of train accidents witnessed in recent weeks.
In a statement on Tuesday, June 14, the Corporation cautioned Kenyans against making or receiving phone calls aboard a train or at the station.
Additionally, Kenya Railways linked some of the accidents to the use of headphones by travellers, a common trend that puts the lives of many at risk.
"Losing sight of what is around you can be dangerous. In our operations, we have witnessed people getting distracted by acts.
"We hereby call on all members of the public to exercise utmost caution by not wearing headphones or earphones while at the railway stations, on board the trains, or anywhere near the railway tracks," read the statement in part.
However, the state corporation maintained that walking on railway tracks remains banned and that stern action would be taken against those who flout the regulation.
"Due to enormous weight and inertia, trains cannot stop instantly and hence have the right of way. For example, a freight train traveling at 80 kilometers per hour pulling 100 loaded wagons, on applying breaks will come to a stop several meters ahead. This is why it is prohibited to sit or walk on the tracks.
"In the same breath, the train's body extends three feet on either side of the track and hence can easily knock anyone walking near the railway tracks. It is therefore prohibited to walk along the railway tracks."
Motorists were also warned against illegal railway crossing, with motorists advised to use designated crossing areas such as level crossings.
The statement by Kenya Railways comes days after 5 people lost their lives while 12 others sustained injuries after a train rammed a lorry at the intersection of Eastern Bypass in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
It was reported that the driver of the lorry underestimated the speed of an incoming train and attempted to cross the line.
In 2021, Kenya Railways stated that those found crossing railways at undesignated crossing points would be arrested and prosecuted.
