Agano Party Presidential Candidate David Waihiga Mwaure has accused Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai of hiring out police cars meant for him.
In a statement dated Thursday, June 23, Mwaure stated that he had not received the police cars assigned to presidential candidates despite writing a demand letter to the police.
Further, the presidential aspirant demanded that the police make public details of cars and security escorts accorded to all the candidates for transparency.
Mwaure stated that he was only calling for fair treatment of all the four presidential candidates that include; Deputy President William Ruto, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and George Wajackoyah of the Roots party.
"According to my inquiries, I have found out as provided for in law and approved in the budget, that, there are cars, escorts, bodyguards. I am entitled but the office of Inspector General is sitting on them and either making money out of them or they have given them to those who are state projects or can pay them.
"I am not asking for special treatment or anything that will increase the cost of living. I am asking for my rights," read the statement in part.
Further, he called on the police to give officers assigned to him off days stating that the two officers had not had time to rest for almost three weeks.
"I also want the two bodyguards I have to be getting at least one day off per week. For about three weeks they have not had a day off. If I do not get all that the others have, I will mention names and go to court."
Additionally, Mwaure called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the sources of Ruto's and Raila's campaign funds given that the candidates were spending billions despite the tough economic times.
"They should investigate and find out where all the Billions that have been and are being used by the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio Coalitions have come from.
"At a time when Kenyans are facing dire economic hardships, Kenyans need to be told if this is money from various scandals that took place when my competitors were and have been in Government or whether this is part of the Ksh15 trillion, being wealth of Kenyans illegally stashed abroad, or worse still this is money from drug barons and interest groups that will later capture Kenya for payback."
Our attempts to reach the police spokesperson, Bruno Shisoso in response to Mwaure's allegations proved futile as he did not respond to our calls and texts at the time of the publication.
However, in an earlier interview with Capital news, the police spokesperson stated that the distribution of police officers would be informed by their assessments of each of the candidates.
The candidates are supposed to reach out to the Inspector General of Police who will make an assessment and see how much he will provide for them," he stated.
