In a statement issued the politician claimed that they were blocked from attending the rally- a scheme purportedly hatched by his rivals to curtail his gubernatorial bid.

"After we unearthed their barbaric schemes to cause chaos at the rallies today, they resorted to violence while blocking other Azimio One Kenya Coalition party candidates from accessing the venue," he stated.

Gumbo added that he had reported the matter to the police who to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book. He affirmed to his supporters that he would not withdraw from the race but instead push forward with relentless aggression on the way to the ballot come the August 9 poll.

"The matter has been forwarded to the police for investigations and those responsible shall be held accountable. I, therefore, urge my supporters to remain calm. Our journey is still on course. A new dawn for the people of Siaya County is nigh," he noted.

Gumbo is contesting for the gubernatorial seat on a United Democratic Movement (UDM) ticket. He is set to face off with Millicent Oduor of Deputy President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and James Orengo of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

UDM and ODM are affiliate parties of Azimio and the face-off sets up fierce sibling rivalry, which Raila Odinga'a camp continues to grapple with.

Gumbo had initially picked former police spokesman Charles Owino as his running mate but the latter withdrew from the race and returned to the service.

This, however, according to Gumbo, did not dent his political aspirations.

“The substantive candidate is not the deputy, the substantive candidate is the governor. At the end of the day, the person Siaya people will be voting for is not Charles Owino even if he was the deputy, the substantive candidate they will be voting for is Engineer Nicholas Gumbo,”

"I am here in person; I wouldn’t be here if I had any fears at all that my name will not be in the ballot.”he stated.
