The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has announced a temporary closure of the Wilson Airport that would affect flights arriving and departing from the airport on Thursday, July 28 and Friday, August 5.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, KCAA's communications manager, Salim Bakari, confirmed that the airport would be closed to pave way for military operations.
KCAA, the body tasked with regulating the airspace in the country, affirmed that the closure would last for six hours starting 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.
"Yes, we anticipate the military drills to be done by the two stipulated dates," he stated.
A section of airlines advised passengers to check the status of their flights beforehand to ensure they were not affected by the development.
"To all our esteemed customers, please note Wilson Airport will be closed on July 28, 2022, and August 5, 2022, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. For further clarification regarding the new timings, call our reservations team," read part of the statement from a local airline.
The notice came weeks after the Wilson airspace was closed to pave way for Madaraka celebrations on Tuesday, May 31.
At the time, the closure caused political murmurs with a section of Kenya Kwanza leaders who accused KCAA of having too many closures.
"They must be called to order. On May 31, 2022, they are closing our airspace for the 6th time in a month. Do they understand the damage they are causing to an already battered economy," FORD-Kenya party leader, Moses Wetangula, stated.
Previously the airspace was also closed for the Kenya Defense Museum Air Show festival that occurred along Lang'ata Road in Nairobi.
"Passengers scheduled to travel on Saturday through Wilson Airport are advised to check with their respective airlines for flight status updates," KCAA stated at the time.
