The United States Embassy in Nairobi has clarified reports that it had warned its citizens against travelling to Kisumu county before, during and immediately after the August 9 polls.

In the statement dated Wednesday, August 3, the US assured Kenyans that it did not have any knowledge of planned violent attacks as reported in a section of the media.

Further, the Embassy stated that the statement was a routine security alert.

"Alerts of this nature to American citizens are common ahead of elections throughout the world, and the United States has no information to suggest the security situation in Kisumu, or in any other parts of Kenya, have been adversely affected by election preparations," the US stated.

The statement also explained that the alert focused on Kisumu county since the city plays host to numerous US Embassy staff and US citizens visit the lakeside city occasionally.

"Kisumu hosts a significant number of US Embassy personnel and is a frequent travel destination for American citizens.

"The US Department of State has no greater responsibility than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas and routinely issues Security Alerts surrounding elections, health conditions, and extreme weather, ensuring U.S. citizens have information that helps inform travel plans," added the Embassy.

Following the statement released earlier, a section of political leaders took to social media to dismiss the report with Kisumu governor, Anyang Nyong'o, assured visitors and residents alike that the city was safe and no violence will be experienced due to the election.

"On the travel advisory issued by the US Embassy Kenya urging American Citizens to avoid travelling to Kisumu, I want to assure those travelling to Kisumu that our people are very peaceful and looking forward to welcoming you. Enjoy our beautiful sunset city," the governor stated.

The US Embassy set movement restrictions and further cautioned its citizens to only visit the city if and when necessary.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy has imposed movement restrictions on personnel in Kisumu. The State Department reminds US citizens of the continued need for sustained vigilance," the alert read in part.

The Embassy further advised Americans to monitor local media for updates, avoid crowds, avoid demonstrations and be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
