After the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, announces the final results of the presidential election, the Assumption of Office Committee will ensure that the president-elect and deputy president-elect are accorded adequate security.

The committee comprises top figures, including Head of Civil Service Joseph Kinyua, Attorney General Kihara Kariuki, Cabinet Secretary for Interior Fred Matiang'i, Chief of Kenya Defence Forces General Robert Kibochi and Director of National Intelligence Services Major General Philip Wachira Kameru.

The committee, which also has the Inspector of the National Police Service Hillary Mutyambai, and Chief Registrar of Judiciary Anne Amadi, shall ensure that the President-elect receives security briefings from the respective national security organs.

Public officers will be required to provide information to the president-elect.

"A public officer who fails to comply with the provisions of this section commits an offence and is liable, on conviction, to a fine not exceeding one million shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or to both," the law dictates.

The committee, chaired by Kinyua, will then publish by a notice in the Gazette the date and place for the conduct of the swearing-in ceremony.

"The day on which the President-elect is sworn in shall be a public holiday," Kenya Law dictates.

"The swearing-in of the President-elect shall be conducted in a public ceremony held in the capital city in accordance with Article 141 of the Constitution," the constitution adds.

The president-elect announced by Chebukati will take the oath or affirmation, which the Chief Registrar will administer before the Chief Justice no earlier than 10.00am and not later than 2.00pm.

"Upon taking or subscribing to the oath or affirmation under subsection (1), the President shall sign a certificate of inauguration in the presence of the Chief Justice or in the absence of the Chief Justice, the Deputy Chief Justice."

After signing the certificate of the inauguration, President Uhuru Kenyatta will hand over to his successor instruments of power and authority.

The instruments of power and authority include a sword and a constitution.

The Aide De Camp (ADC) will move swiftly from behind Uhuru and stand behind the new president, then give a stiff salute completing the signal that the guard has changed.

After that, the deputy president-elect will also take the oath of office.

"The deputy president-elect shall take and subscribe to the oath or affirmation of allegiance and oath or affirmation for the execution of the functions of the office in accordance with Article 148 of the Constitution," the law states.

The new president will then give an inauguration speech to Kenyans.

At the moment, Kenya Kwanza Presidential William Ruto and his Azimio la Umoja counterpart, Raila Odinga, are in a neck-and-neck contest to succeed Uhuru.
