Azimio leader Raila Odinga now wants the Independent Election and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Wafula Chebukati kicked out of office.

Speaking during a rally in Mombasa on Wednesday, August 24, Raila said IEBC vice chairperson Juliana Cherera, should take over from her boss and oversee the gubernatorial elections in Kakamega and Mombasa counties.

The former Prime Minister stated that the accusations levelled against the Chebukati were valid grounds to remove him from office.

Raila blamed the suspension of the polls on Chebukati, claiming that he colluded with their opponents to have the polls postponed.

"We want the Kakamega and Mombasa elections to be overseen by IEBC Deputy Chairperson Juliana Cherera. Chebukati as an accused person in our petition should disqualify himself," Raila stated.

The ODM boss claimed that the elections in areas perceived as their strongholds were postponed to dent his numbers in the presidential vote.

He expressed confidence that the Azimio would carry the day in the gubernatorial elections set for Monday, August 29.

Raila made the statements while drumming support for the ODM gubernatorial candidate Abdulswamad Nassir in the Coastal county. He was accompanied by his running mate Martha Karua and a host of legislators-elect including Lang'ata's Phelix Odiwuor alias Jalang'o.

Additionally, the Azimio presidential candidate stated that his legal team would prove to the Supreme Court that there was indeed electoral malpractice in the concluded August 9 polls, given the evidence that had been gathered.

He insisted that IEBC officials were involved in a scheme to rig him out, citing the arrest of three Venezuelans at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

However, he urged the court to declare him the winner rather than having another election.

"We want the court to declare that we have won and instead of voting again announce us as the winners so that we can take the oath of office," he stated.

Wafula Chebukati is set to exit office on January 20, 2023 when his tenure expires. The IEBC chairperson was appointed months before the August 2017 polls by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
