Director of Communications William Samoei Ruto Presidential Campaign Secretariat Hussein Mohammed has distanced himself from a letter making rounds on social media over arrears owed to influencers amounting to Ksh13.7 million ($114,643).

The letter dated Wednesday, August 24, claimed that Mohammed, addressed an individual named Daniel Rotich claimed to be United Democratic Alliance's finance director asking the money to be disbursed to five influencers.

Signatures alleged to be Mohammed's and UDA's secretary general Veronica Maina were also embedded in the fake letter purporting that the five influencers provided Twitter poll services to the coalition between Tuesday, August 9 and Monday, August 22.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Mohammed, however, disregarded the letter as fake and noted that it never originated from him.

A spot-check by this writer also showed that some of the Twitter handles referenced in the letter have been inactive since inception.

For instance, the account of one Charles Hornsby has never made a post since it was created in 2015 yet it billed UDA northwards of Ksh6 million.

Another handle impersonated that of East Africa Correspondent for The Economist Magazine, Adrian Blomfield, demanding Ksh2.6 million.

The other impersonated Nic Cheeseman who is a professor of Democracy at the University of Birmingham and has appeared on CNN as a guest.

Since its inception, the UDA party has flagged fraudulent schemes aimed at tarnishing its reputation, including one that targeted its members and supporters in July 2022.

At the time, the scammers were said to be calling unsuspecting Kenyans to contribute money towards party activities.

Veronica Maina  confirmed that they received numerous complaints and the party's administrators traced three phone numbers involved in the scheme.
