Three people were injured when a device exploded at a scrap metal yard in Nairobi's Kariobangi Light industries.

Officers from the Anti-Terror Police Unit - ATPU confirmed that the incident happened in Kariobangi North Estate on Wednesday, August 24 when a customer presented a metallic object to one of the yards with a request to have it cut.

“The explosion was a low order detonation because it occurred within the fusing system of the ordinance after explosives had already been removed from it,” detectives said.

The Anti-terror police and detectives  established that the exploded device was an 84mm military equipment.

The three men sustained injuries to their legs and eyes when the metallic object exploded during welding.

According to a police report, the injured were taken to Mama Lucy Hospital where they were treated.

“When they were in the  process of cutting down the device to divide the metallic from non-metallic parts, a mini explosive occurred causing slight injuries to the three employees who were present at the scene,”

The victims have been identified as Morris Kamau, Simon Gichoi, and Ali Kitheka.

Police also confirmed the explosion damaged a vehicle that had been parked next to the yard.

The Anti-terror police unit from Starehe Constituency were deployed to assess the scene and take samples for further investigations.

Kenya, like many other countries around the world, continues to fight Terrorism. Recently the United Kingdom (UK) Funded a Ksh81 million facility in the Coast region to provide a dedicated specie for ATPU to work on terrorism cases.

It also cooperates with the United States, for instance the General Service Unit Counter terrorism response team that is funded by the US government to combat Terrorism in the country.
