A thug was killed after he unknowingly robbed a detective from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) outside a mosque in Nairobi.

The thug was killed on the night of  Saturday, August 27, in Eastleigh, when he accosted a man walking from a mosque who turned out to be an undercover detective.

The thug and his accomplice, who were on a motorbike, had confronted the DCI detective in an attempt to steal his mobile phone, a wallet, and other valuables before one of them fired at the detective missing his ear by a whisker.

A statement shared on Sunday, August 28 by the DCI showed that the thug and his accomplice were on a motorbike before they confronted Corporal Abu as he walked from a mosque in Ushirika estate, at around 9 pm.

Upon attack by the thugs, the detective based at a specialized unit within DCI headquarters whipped out his firearm and fired at them killing one of the thugs instantly.

As the detective tried to disarm the robber, his accomplice jumped on the motorbike and tried to speed off but the Motorbike could not start forcing him to jump into a culvert by the roadside.

The DCI detective shot severally at the thug as he tried to flee the scene. However, the thug managed to escape after sustaining wounds from gunshots.

The detective recovered a Jericho pistol with six rounds of live ammunition and a black motorcycle was also impounded.

The officers based at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory - Ballistic Unit, have since identified the pistol as a police firearm that was snatched from a senior police officer in Naivasha.

The firearm was stolen on November 16, 2020, in an armed robbery incident when an officer was accosted at the entrance to his home in Lakeview Estate as he went home after overseeing the enforcement of curfew orders at the height of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, detectives are cautioning medical practitioners to be on the lookout for a short, well-built middle-aged man, with bullet wounds to report to detectives immediately.

This attack comes in the wake of increased deployment of undercover detectives across the city, as the Directorate takes steps to destabilise criminal gangs that regroup after general elections.
