Jubilee party secretary general, Jeremiah Kioni, has stated that the outgoing ruling party will support electoral reforms through any constitutional amendments launched before the 2027 General Election.
Addressing the media on Saturday, September 3, Kioni opined that the current electoral system has loopholes that need to be addressed as the lives of Kenyans often come to a standstill in every election cycle.
The former Ndaragua member of parliament cited the August 9 presidential election, which was challenged at the Supreme Court, as a major reason for constitutional reforms.
"We need a more lasting solution to this political difficulty that seems to come every five years. As Jubilee, we are ready and willing to participate in any platform of constitutional reforms.
'It is painful to see how Kenyans are suffering. These issues will be better addressed if we did not have this kind of paralysis. We can undertake the necessary constitutional amendments our 2010 Constitution badly needs," he stated.
Further, he argued that the reforms would bring lasting peace to the country as every Kenyan would feel that the electoral process is free and fair.
'Constitutional reforms are the most effective solution and the only hope to these problems.
"We shall only achieve social justice and economic fairness for all communities by enacting these reforms," he added.
In regard to the ongoing petition discussed at the Supreme Court, the SG expressed confidence in the process further calling on Kenyans to maintain peace regardless of the outcome.
"We appreciate the calmness that we have witnessed from the lawyers and judges at the Supreme Court," he stated.
Jubilee Party supported constitutional reforms under the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) that was declared null and void by the Supreme Court.
One of the major issues BBI proposed was addressing the winner-takes-it-all situation by creating an expanded executive to allow more regional balancing in the sharing of the national cake.
