Kenyans have continued to shine globally especially with entrepreneurship guided by cuisine and traditions from their root African community.

Lately, two brothers David Kimani and Collins Ngure, have found success in food truck across Birmingham in the Alabama, United States, dedicated to selling Kenyan-inspired meals.

Launched in 2020, the truck branded Sahani (Swahili word for plate) specialises in foods such as Nyama Choma and Matumbo (tripe) - both of which retail at Ksh2,400 a plate served with an accompaniment.

Other meals on the roster include Chapati (which retails for Ksh300 a piece), Sausage (Ksh300) as well as Mutura and Mokimo.

Since launching the business, the two reported that Matumbo and Nyama Choma had been gaining attention.

“We normally sell out of Nyama Choma because people are interested in trying something new

"(Matumbo) is so rich and flavorful, really good. When people first hear tripe, they’re like, ‘ugh.’ We give them samples—‘Here, try this.’ And they say, ‘Yeah, let me get that," revealed Kimani in a past interview.

The truck makes rounds at breweries, bars, and parks around Birmingham area which was expanded to include Sahani Kitchen that offers take out only.

Born in Nairobi, Kimani, his brother and their family moved to the United States in search of a better life in 2002.

Ngure loved cooking and so the duo saved up enough money to purchase the truck and import the Kenyan cuisine into Alabama.

Initially, they planned to open a small kitchen but due to pandemic they bought the mobile truck for easier deliveries.

“Taking a deep into the Kenyan culture. I feel like a lot of people don’t travel the world, but you can get a taste of Kenya right here in Birmingham,” added Kimani.
