Machakos Governor, Wavinya Ndeti, on Monday, September 5, reprimanded county government drivers over their complacency in adhering to the law during an audit of all state-owned vehicles in the county.

While addressing the media, the governor threatened to fire workers who used the county government vehicles for their personal use - which is not their intended purpose.

Ndeti noted that most of the county vehicles lacked proper documents such as logbooks and number plates while some vehicles had their numbers printed on pieces of paper.

She cautioned the workers not to engage in practices that would sabotage the efforts of streamlining the transport department in the county.

"After conducting the audit, we found that a lot of these drivers' vehicles lack number plates and logbooks hence people use them for personal use. Other tractors are available but not in working conditions. From today, before they embark on any journey, they ought to be fitted with the county government number plates.

"We cannot allow people to use state resources for their benefit. I want to give you a notice that I have not come to fire anyone but if you don't do your job, I will give it to someone else," she stated.

Further, the governor also paid an impromptu visit to Machakos Level 5 hospital to inspect the health services at the facility.

She noted that her administration would ensure affordable healthcare services are availed to all Machakos residents.

The news comes on the backdrop of new governors stamping their authorities in a bid to set the pace for their five-year terms.

Kisii Governor, Simba Arati, recently reprimanded ghost workers in his county after discovering 256 drivers were on payroll to operate only 82 vehicles.

"I expected to see 256 drivers who I called here,  this is sickening, how else can we explain? Are some drivers passengers in those vehicles?" Arati posed.
