Ukraine President Vlodomyr Zelensky on Thursday, September 8, congratulated President-elect William Ruto on his victory in the concluded General Election.

Zelensky welcomed Ruto's win and affirmed that Ukraine will continue to partner with Kenya in matters that affect the two countries.

In particular, the Ukrainian noted that his country will guarantee Africa's food security amid concerns over the high cost of wheat.

Further, he also underscored the importance of Kenya as a member of the United Nations Security Council.

“Had the 1st conversation in the history of bilateral relations with the newly elected president, William Ruto," read the statement.

“Congratulated him on his victory and thanked Kenya as a UNSC member for its support in international organizations. Ukraine will continue to be the guarantor of Africa's food security.”

Kenya and Africa at large have been affected by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine since its beginning in February with the two among the leading exporters of wheat in the world.

The conflict between the two nations grounded the smooth transit of wheat and subsequently led to an increment in prices.

Ruto, during an interview with CNN's Christian Amanpour on Wednesday, September 7 stated that he was willing to partner with other leaders in the world to resolve the conflict.

While admitting that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine led to a shortage of grains, he maintained that his government would not take sides in the row.

“I would encourage that instead of finger-pointing and blame game as to who is responsible for what, we should sort out collectively as the international community the conflict in Ukraine so that whether that conflict that is responsible for the shortage of grain, we put it behind us," Ruto stated.

“I would be part of the leadership that will work with other partners in the international community for the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine,” he added.

Zelensky is among the global leaders who have congratulated Ruto ahead of his swearing-in as Kenya's fifth president.

On Wednesday, September 8, United States President Joe Biden sent Ruto a congratulatory message through the White House Press Secretary.

“We congratulate William Ruto on his election as president of Kenya and also commend Raila Odinga for abiding by the Supreme Court’s ruling,” the White House Press Secretary stated.
