Three traders based in Nakuru County are nursing injuries after a restaurant wall collapsed on them.

The trio were rushed to a nearby health facility where they received first aid and consequent treatment for their sustained injuries.

It is reported that part of the walls of Kokeb restaurant caved in the afternoon hours of Thursday, September 8.

Speaking to the media, Racheal Wangari- a survivor of the incident - stated that the structural integrity of the wall had been in question over the years given a crack that had emerged.

Wangari expressed that she was lucky to have survived the incident after escaping by a whisker.

"I had a loud bang and just realised I was pushed forward. Three people were injured in the incident. One of them is a lady who sells candy while the other two are gentlemen who are shoe shiners.

She added that many of the traders did not think that the crack was dangerous for five years since it emerged.

"There was a crack in the wall but we never thought anything would happen because it has been there for five years. There were no efforts to repair the wall in five years," she narrated.

Police based in Nakuru are investigating the matter and are yet to release a comprehensive statement over the same.

In recent years, several Kenyans have lost their lives following the collapse of buildings that have been blamed on poor workmanship by contractors.

In June 2022, the National Construction Authority (NCA) suspended 18 contractors after investigations were launched over the rise in collapsed buildings across the country.

“There is an inquiry that happens for any collapse that occurs. We have conclusively conducted 21 inquiries by the NCA board. Out of those inquiries, 18 contractors have since been suspended,” NCA director Maurice Akech stated then.
