Outgoing Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has deactivated his Twitter account.

A spot check by Kenyans.co.ke, revealed that Matiangi's account no longer exists.

A search of his account under the handle @FredMatiangi showed that the account has been deactivated.

"This account doesn’t exist," read search results.

The deletion coincided with President William Ruto's swearing-in, and came days after Dr Matiangi penned an emotional farewell letter, thanking staff and Kenyans for giving him a chance to serve the country.

In the letter, he also absolved his ministry from accusations that he was hell bent to manipulate the outcome of August 9 elections.

"Despite immense criticism, scorn and false accusations of scheming to manipulate and interfere with the General Election, our sector put up a stellar and professional performance in supporting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct the General Election," he stated.

"The just-concluded Presidential petitions and the subsequent ruling did not indict our expansive team across the country any wrongdoing. This affirms our collective professionalism and due diligence to duty. Equally, it is my conviction that those tasked with facilitating the smooth transition to the next administration will exhibit similar professionalism," read part of the letter.

Matiang’i was left in the middle of the fallout between former president Uhuru Kenyatta and and Ruto, then the Deputy President, with the CS taking over some of the roles that were previously performed by the DP.

In the government reorganization that rubbed Ruto and his allies the wrong way, Matiangi became the super CS, wielding enviable powers.

He came under sharp criticism from Ruto and his footsoldiers who accused him of weaponizing the criminal system in the run up to the August 9 polls.

Ruto's Kenya Kwanza claimed Uhuru was using the provincial administration under Matiangi's docket to campaign for Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

Matiangi's decision to deactivate his Twitter account mirrors what retired President Uhuru Kenyatta did in 2019.

According to the Presidential Press Unit, the accounts were suspended to allow a clean-up to weed out unauthorized access to his accounts.

Nzioka Waita who was the then head of the Presidential Delivery Unit stated that the suspension was temporary to allow the clean-up process. However, the former president is not active on any of the social media sites to date.

"All official social media handles for the President have been temporarily suspended to allow for the necessary remedial measures to be undertaken,” Nzioka stated in 2019.

Uhuru first appointed Matiangi as ICT Cabinet Secretary in 2013, before he was moved to the crucial ministry of education and later to the powerful Interior docket.

Prior to his appointment to cabinet, Matiangi was a lecturer at the University of Nairobi.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's daughter Winnie Odinga also deleted her account on Tuesday, September 13, after being attacked by some of the Azimio leaders.

Winnie had earlier in the day claimed that her account had been hacked after being accused of being rude.

Activist Boniface Mwangi, in a long article on Monday, September 12, claimed that Odinga's family members were part of the reason why Azimio lost the polls.

"Azimio had too many self-important people doing zero work; sycophants, the presidential candidate’s family, and incompetent people in critical roles.

They behaved as if we had won and failed to carry out their assigned roles diligently. They trashed feedback, ignored messages, and never returned calls," stated Mwangi.
