Three Kenyan doctors successfully undertook the first four-vessel cardiac bypass surgery in the country at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH).

Olive Mugenda, KU Referral's board chairperson, commended the doctors for the successful exercise in a statement dated Friday, September 16.

Doctors Isaac Adembesa, David Kanyeki and Mishra Bashisth led a team of medical practitioners in undertaking the surgery which entails blocking four arteries that supply blood into the human heart and later grafting vessels to restore blood flow.

This procedure is meant to treat coronary artery disease caused by fatty materials on the walls of the arteries and hence limiting the supply of oxygen.

"The patient is well. KUTRRH is committed to undertaking such surgeries as expected of a Level 6 Hospital,' read the statement in part.

Isaac Adembesa - one of the doctors who undertook the surgery- currently heads the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the hospital.

He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Medicine and Surgery from Moi University where he graduated in 2008.

On the other hand, Dr Kanyeki is a cardiologist at the KUTRRH and holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Nairobi.

He also holds a Master's Degree in anaesthesiology from Agha Khan University and has previously worked at Karen Hospital.

KU Referral has state-of-the-art cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment facilities that enable its doctors to handle complex cardiovascular diseases.

The facility was developed in response to the ever-increasing number of deaths related to cardiovascular conditions in the world.

It also provides an alternative to Kenyans who sought treatment at the usually busy Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), travel abroad or pay hefty fees at local private hospitals.

Since its launch in 2019, the hospital has conducted historic surgeries such as implanting single chamber permanent pacemakers and open heart surgeries.
