Justin Muturi Settles for Lower Salary as AG; Other Hefty Perks

Former Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi was among the loyal troops rewarded in President William Ruto's Cabinet after he was nominated as the new Attorney General. 

After undergoing the vetting process before the National Assembly committee, Muturi will become the eighth AG, succeeding Paul Kihara Kariuki. 

The former Speaker will take the role of defending and upholding the rule of law while also protecting the public interest and advising the President. In regards to the two pivotal roles, Kenyans.co.ke takes a look at the hefty benefits the two positions possess.

Salary Difference

According to the latest review by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), Muturi will earn Ksh554,400 basic salary and a gross salary of Khs924,000.

On the other hand, as the National Assembly Speaker, he enjoyed a basic salary of Ksh696,000 and a gross salary of Ksh1,160,000.  This means that the AG nominee took a Ksh236,000 pay cut - a difference of 20 per cent.

Benefits for AG

As a State Officer in the Executive of the National Government, Muturi will be entitled to a house allowance of Ksh200,000, provision of an official car not exceeding 3,000cc and a salary market adjustment of Ksh169,600. 

Others include medical benefits of up to Ksh10 million for inpatient, Ksh300,000 for outpatient, Ksh150,000 for Maternity, Ksh75,000 for Dental and Ksh75,000 for Optical. 

He will also enjoy a group life insurance, a group personal accident cover, an Annual Leave Allowance of Ksh50,000 per annum, airtime of Ksh20,000 a month, a car loan of up to Ksh10 million and a mortgage of up to Ksh40 million. 

Benefits for Speaker

The speaker position, currently held by Moses Wetangula, comes with hefty annual allowances and benefits. The position attracts a Parliamentary Responsibility Allowance of Ksh3.6 million, Extraneous Duty allowance of Ksh1.4 million and entertainment allowance of Ksh1.4 million.

The speaker also gets an airtime allowance of up to Ksh25,000 per month, a Special Responsibility Allowance of up to a maximum of Ksh150,000, an official government car not exceeding 3,000 ccs, and medical cover for self, spouse and children.
