A church caretaker is on the run after he stole Ksh1.5 million from a church in Kangemi, Nairobi County, after the Sunday service on Sunday, October 9.

The man who lived in the church compound is believed to have interfered with the electric power in the church to disable the CCTV cameras.

According to its treasurer, Elizabeth Njoki, the caretaker went through the church's altar in search of the contribution money.

The treasurer further detailed the disbelief she had when she found the church doors left wide open while the Lord's table at the ACK All Saints Mountain View Church was left disorganised.

As she went to collect the money on the morning of Monday, October 10 accompanied by one of the church elders, the two found the drawer missing at the church's altar.

Following the report made at the Kangemi Police Station, detectives in the area have launched a manhunt for the suspect.

The congregation was, however, torn on what should be done to the suspect. Some called for his arrest and 'cursed' his plans if he does not return the loot.

Others rallied for his forgiveness and asked him to present himself and seek forgiveness from the congregation and God.

Regardless of the varying opinions, the congregants, together with the area residents, were astonished by the unexpected act committed by the trusted caretaker.

The stolen money had been raised to aid in the development of the community church.

Interestingly, cases of church members or robbers stealing from the church are not new in the country. In 2020, a member of a church in Murang'a was caught on camera stealing from the church coffers and stashed the bank notes in his pocket.

Churches have resorted to using CCTV cameras to catch thieves and other unscrupulous members of society who plan on stealing from the house of the Lord.
