Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi has nominated Felix Kipng’ok, 36, to fill his father's shoes as the deputy governor.

Felix's father, Charles Kipng'ok, collapsed and died at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while boarding a flight to Mombasa on September 14.

The governor, through the leader of the majority, Lawi Tallam, tabled Felix Kipng'ok's name at the county assembly for approval.

After deliberation by the assembly, his name was subsequently submitted to the Committee of Appointment pending the composition for vetting according to Section 32 (d) of the Counties Act.

The committee now has 14 days to approve and pass a resolution regarding the suitability of Felix Kipng'ok.

According to the law, when a Deputy Governor (DG) dies in office, resigns or is impeached, a governor nominates a candidate within 14 days, who must be approved by the county assembly within 60 days.

Felix, an engineer, is the firstborn son of the late deputy governor, Charles Kipng'ok.

His father was said to have developed breathing problems at JKIA while en route to attending the Council of Governor's induction workshop.

The succession politics was evident during the burial when Tugen elders and a section of Baringo Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) pushed to have his son selected as his successor.

They argued that Felix has a Master’s in Petroleum Engineering and is well-conversant with the plans of his late father.

"We want Kipng'ok to take the mantle. He fully understands his father's plan for the county,"  Cherambus stated.
