The Senate Health Committee headed by Jackson Mandago on Tuesday, October 25, opened a probe into the mysterious death of baby Travis Maina.

Maina passed away under mysterious circumstances after a fork Jembe got lodged in his brain - prompting a countrywide outcry.

Speaking to the press, Mandago noted that the committee had put in place measures that would help establish lapses that might have caused the death of the minor.

He further explained that a meeting held by the committee's members had resolved to invite several witnesses to unravel the minor's demise among them, parents of the deceased and staff belonging to Thika Level 5 Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital.

Mandago added that the investigations would officially kick off on Monday, October 31, with a meeting with the parents.

The committee will investigate the policy issues, especially in the health facilities, that handled the deceased`s case and ascertain if there was negligence that led to the passing on of the minor- as claimed by Maina's family.

The matter was tabled by Kajiado Senator Hamida Kibwana.

The boy passed away on Tuesday night, October 11, nearly 24 hours after he was hit with the fork jembe.

Maina's mother, Judy Muthoni, believed that her son's life would have been saved should KNH medics acted swiftly to offer him treatment.

She claimed that the hospital sought Ksh20,500 to secure a bed- funds that Maina's family could not raise.

"We arrived at Kenyatta at 6.35 pm (on Monday) and were asked to pay Ksh1,260, which my sister Lucy Wambui paid, After we failed to raise the amount, we spent Monday night and part of Tuesday morning at the casualty, where my son died while waiting to be admitted and taken to the theatre in the afternoon,

"I blame them for the death of my son. They were more concerned about me raising Ksh20,500 to secure a bed than saving my son. I paid the price for being poor," she stated.

The child was laid to rest on Tuesday, October 18, at Kilimambogo, Kiambu County.
