Decorated Career of Pakistani Police Boss Investigating Arshad Sharif's Murder

Mohammad Athar Waheed, the director of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sent by the government of Pakistan to investigate Arshad Sharif's murder in Kenya, is a decorated law enforcer in the Asian nation. 

The detective was accompanied by the deputy director-general of the Intelligence Bureau, Omar Shahid Hamid and Lt. Colonel Saad Ahmed.

Waheed's career spanning 17 years began in 2005 when he joined the force as an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Cantt, Pakistan.

The FIA boss has a background in criminology, history, philosophy, human rights and victimology.

In 2009, he was transferred to Punjab Police Pakistan, where he worked as a superintendent of police for three years and one month until 2012.

The police boss was later transferred to the National Highways and Motorways Police, where he was responsible for police administration and accountability, human resource management, training and capacity building.

Waheed was then appointed as a director at FIA in February 2020 before being appointed to lead the agency a year later.

The Pakistani top cop also runs a non-profit social service organization called the Pakistan Society of Victimology that aims to improve the conditions of victims of Crime and Terrorism in Pakistan.

In August 2022, Athar Waheed was part of a five-member team tasked with supervising the inquiry teams of FIA's respective zones that probed the Elec­tion Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in a funding case.

The career cop has one PhD, in Victimology and three Masters Degrees, including a Masters of Science in Criminology.

Meanwhile, the Federal Investigation Agency is a border control, criminal investigation, counter-intelligence and security agency in Pakistan created under the FIA Act 1974 (VIII of 1975).

The agency is responsible for investigations and undertaking operations against terrorism, espionage, federal crimes, smuggling as well as infringement and other specific crimes.
