Police in Nairobi have turned up the heat against a resurfaced gang using motorcycles to steal from unsuspecting Kenyans.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, November 2, Nairobi Police Commander James Mugera noted that 200 motorcycles had already been impounded in the operation.

He further explained that a majority of the motorcycles lacked valid number plates or their operators did not have proper documentation.

Following the crackdown, 28 individuals were taken behind bars.

"To date, we have nabbed nearly 200 motorbikes and most of them do not have number plates or those who were riding them do not possess the requisite documentation.

"Roughly 28 people are still being grilled and we know some of them, especially in Kilimani, have been positively identified as those involved," he stated.

He also cautioned Kenyans to be weary of the motorbike gang which meticulously trails its victims and steals valuables from them.

In one instance that occurred at Mountain View along Waiyaki Way, a motorcycle trailed a person carrying cash.

Witnesses reported that they heard gunshots before the gang, which was on a motorbike, rode away after shooting dead the victim. They made away with approximately Ksh50,000 in cash.

In his address, Mugera maintained that the police were focused on flushing out all the criminals.

"I issue a warning, to all those involved in crime, especially those using motorbikes, we shall not tire or retreat and we shall track them where they are," he added.

The crime rate in the city has been on the rise owing to the continuously rising cost of living across the country.
