The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned Kenyans of fake social media accounts created using President William Ruto and his wife, Rachel's names being used to con Kenyans.
In a statement dated November 6, DCI agency indicated that there was a rising trend of fake social media accounts targeting the first family.
The agency indicated that the scammers would approach Kenyans in search of interest-free loans to mint money from the desperate individuals
As a disguise, the scammers would tell their victims that they are aides of Ruto and Rachel promising to secure funding within a short period of time.
However, they would demand payment so as to fastrack the disbursement of the loans.
"Unsuspecting Kenyan’s not aware of the existence of such scammers sent money to a provided Mpesa account which was then transferred to a till number under the suspect’s name.
"It is only after their calls went unanswered afterwards, that reality dawned on them that they had become the latest victims of fraud from tech-savvy teenagers taking advantage of gullible Kenyans online," DCI stated.
Following numerous complains lodged with the police, DCI arrested a 19-year-old running the scam scheme.
"The suspect operated a call centre that received calls from would-be beneficiaries before they were escalated to the ‘loans officer’ for action.
"Three mobile phones used in the transactions were seized from the suspect," DCI stated
Kenyans were urged to only follow verified accounts of the head of state and the first lady.
DCI is also pursuing other scammers who have opened accounts in the names of other prominent Kenyans.
Other prominent Kenyans whose accounts have been targeted include, Defence CS Aden Duale, Chief Justice Martha Koome and Tuto's aide-de-camp Col Fabian Lengusuranga.
