Police Announce Nationwide Crackdown on Contraband Goods

The National Police Service (NPS) under the Acting Inspector General Noor Gabow has announced a countrywide crackdown on all illegal and contraband goods and other forms of tax evasion schemes.

In a statement dated Sunday, November 6, NPS noted it will liaise with the taxman to apprehend the culprits.

He added that if any incident of tax evasion is detected, the taxman will be contacted immediately to lead the investigation to a logical conclusion.

According to the police the crackdown was triggered by the rampant tax evasion schemes in the country.

"I direct all police officers across the country to keep vigilance within their areas of responsibility and conduct intelligence-led crackdown operations with the focus on countering all types of revenue evasion," Gabow directed.

"The crackdown to commence with immediate effect under the coordination of respective commanders at all levels," he added.

In the statement, Gabow reiterated the government's role of collecting taxes that are used in the funding of various development projects in the country.

"Unfortunately some unscrupulous taxpayers devise ways to cheat and evade paying taxes due hence affect projected revenue generation targets," Gabow lamented.

Gabow added that is the duty of law enforcement officers to work with other relevant agencies to detect, prevent and report all aspects of crime in the country.

The police on Friday November 4, impounded a lorry carrying at least 1000 cartoons containing 20 bottles of alcohol with suspected counterfeit stamps.

The truck which was headed to Nairobi from Embu and was seized by the police officers in Kirinyaga county.

"The content will be ferried to Nyeri where it will be subjected to further verification in order to ascertain the authenticity of the stamps and later the safety of the content," Police commander Mathew Mang'ira announced.
