Azimio and Kenya Kwanza big shots will know the fate of their bid for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) as parliamentary committee meets this week.
The Joint Committee on election of EALA members met on Monday, November 7 for the Pre-nomination briefing ahead of the election.
Kenya is assigned 9 slots in the 62-member legislative assembly that sits in Arusha, Tanzania.
Parliament called for applications for the EALA positions in late October 2022 with applicants given up to November 2 to submit their applications.
According to the arrangement, political parties have until Wednesday, November 9, morning to return names of their preferred nominees from 287 applicants with the nomination exercise slated for the same day.
Among the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance bigwigs eyeing the positions include former Kieni Constituency MP Kanini Kega, former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni and former Wajir MP Fatuma Gedi.
Kega, Kioni and Gedi lost their parliamentary seats in the just concluded August 9 elections which they were contesting on Jubilee tickets under the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
Nominated senator and UDA Secretary-General Veronica Maina told the Nation that the party was yet to nominate its representative, but sources indicate that former KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion could be one of the UDA nominees.
Each lawmaker in the East African Legislative Assembly earns nearly Sh1.4 million per month and UDA and ODM are expected to have more representation considering that they have the largest number of elected members of the National Assembly.
The meeting at Parliament buildings by the Joint Committee was presided over by Clerk of the Senate Jeremiah Nyegenye and his Counterpart from the National Assembly Samuel Njoroge.
Among those in attendance included the Leader of Majority in the National Assembly Kimani Ichung`wah, Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi, Kilifi Stewart Madzayo, Makueni Dan Maanzo and Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia.
Members deliberated on the modalities of the nomination exercise and later election of the 9 members who will represent Kenya in the Arusha based Legislature.
Wednesday`s nomination exercise will pave the way for the election scheduled for November 17 with both houses voting through secret ballot.
