With the many childbirth complications, especially at a young age, a 20-year from Gatundu Kiambu county was left dealing with more than she could handle.

According to the young mother's family, while bringing forth new life, a medical mishap left her frequently visiting the hospital.

Surgeons at the facility where she was operated on reportedly left a piece of cotton in her body.

Following the incident, the new mother has since undergone, four surgeries to undo the damages caused

Some of the operations were aimed at cleaning out any infection caused. The family and the victim have thus dealt with unimaginable emotional pain not to mention the financial burden.

According to medical experts, one of the main effects of such a mishap is an infection that can cause the patient unbearable pain.

On the dangerous side, objects left in the body after surgery may result in death.

A medical practitioner may miscalculate the number of gauze (cotton material) used on a patient thus resulting in gossypiboma.

Gossypiboma is a term used to denote a mass of cotton material, usually, gauze, sponges, and towels, inadvertently left in the body cavity at the end of a surgical operation

In 2016, a similar case was reported in Bondo sub-county after a 19-year-old delivered through cesarean section but unfortunately lost the child.

According to the parents, the victim developed abnormal abdominal swelling and pain in the affected area.

Other materials were found left in her body after a second surgery was conducted at a different facility, but she was held hostage due to the pending Ksh100,000 medical bill.
