The National Police Service (NPS) on Tuesday, November 29, clarified reports that Kamukunji Grounds had been cordoned off ahead of Azimio La Umoja Leader Raila Odinga's rally.
Through the office of the Spokesperson, the NPS distanced itself from reports that making rounds on social media.
"I am not aware of such an order from the Inspector General of Police Japeth Koome," Police Spokesperson Dr. Resila Atieno Onyango clarified.
Social media reports had previously indicated that IG Koome had ordered the police to seal off the Kamukunji grounds in Kibra.
According to the reports, the closure of Kamkunji grounds is meant to allow KCPE students to take their exams in a conducive environment.
Raila on November 27, 2022 confirmed that he will lead his political troop for a countrywide rallies to seek opinions from the public on the petition that is seeking the removal of four IEBC commissioners.
Speaking in Kisumu, the ODM Party Leader Raila noted that the rallies will begin in major cities and spread out to other towns.
"I want to talk about critical issues about IEBC commissioners, we are going to consult widely with the people of Kenya, we will begin in Nairobi on Wednesday," he said.
"We will have a meeting with the people of Nairobi at Kamukunji grounds to ask if they accept that these commissioners should go home."
According to Raila, the four chose to stand with the truth and that is why President William Ruto's government is hellbent on pushing them.
However, Ruto responded to Raila noting that he will not be cowed into doing what is not good for the country.
"The lords of impunity, who destroyed oversight institutions using the handshake fraud, should allow parliament to hold rogue officials who put the nation in danger by subverting the democratic will of the people to be held to account," stated Ruto.
Already, Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) is conducting hearings after four petitions were filed at Parliament. The MPs will table a report on the floor of the House - a report that could seal the fate of the embattled commissioners.
